S.T.E.V.E, Big Dipper & Picket Fence Aurora
There are two rare astral phenomena in this image. S.T.E.V.E (Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancements), the ribbon of gas flowing across the night sky that only, but not always accompanies, the aurora borealis; and the bright green vertical hash marks known as picket fence auroras. A type of aurora that only, but not always, accompanies displays of S.T.E.V.E. Both against a backdrop of the big dipper and the signature brilliant green aurora borealis (Northern Lights).
